The Spring Festival is the most important traditional festival in China. It has a history of thousands of years and is a grand festival for the Chinese people to celebrate the new year.

The origin of the Spring Festival can be traced back to the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1046 BC). At that time, people held a ceremony at the end of each year to worship the gods and ancestors and pray for a good harvest in the coming year. This ceremony was called "Nian".

In the Western Zhou Dynasty (c. 1046 BC-771 BC), the "Nian" ceremony was gradually combined with the "Shangsi" Festival, which was held on the third day of the third lunar month. The "Shangsi" Festival was a festival for people to pray for blessings and to get rid of bad luck.

In the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206 BC), the first emperor of China, Qin Shihuang, unified the calendar and set the first day of the first lunar month as the new year. This day was called "Yuanri".

In the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), the Spring Festival became a formal festival. During the Han Dynasty, people began to celebrate the Spring Festival by visiting relatives and friends, setting off firecrackers, and eating dumplings.
